New York’s Cipriani South Street in Manhattan was the setting for the 2022 CFDA Fashion Awards, the annual ceremony that honors the best in American fashion. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) was founded in 1962 and includes over 450 American fashion and accessory designers.
The night, which Vogue says reflects “the fast-changing landscape of American fashion today” hands out awards in womenswear, menswear, jewelry and more. This year, Kim Kardashian received the new Innovation Award while Lenny Kravitz received the 2022 Fashion Icon award. Other awards given out that night include the Founder’s Award to curator Andrew Bolton, the Womenswear award to Catherine Holstein from Khaite, the Positive Social Influence award to Phillip Lim, and a special posthumous honor to late designer Virgil Abloh.
Actress Natasha Lyonne hosted a stellar event, held in partnership with Amazon Fashion. It also commemorated the 60th anniversary of the CFDA.

The ceremony, bringing out a veritable who’s who in fashion, usually comes with striking style moments from the biggest stars. Alas, I was waiting for Beyonce in Givenchy (2016) or Rihanna in a nude dress and head covering (2014) moment, but this year just didn’t have the same panache. Even though almost all the Kardashian-Jenners were in attendance. There were just a few simple but pretty dresses, some cutouts and sharp shoulders and a whole lotta black.
The Best Dressed at the 2022 CFDA Fashion Awards

Katie Holmes always cuts a stunning figure. This flapper dress was like no other I saw at the event.

Most of the night was underwhelming. Sure, Kendall Jenner is 27 years-old. This is probably the best I’ve ever seen her look.

If this is going to be the way that Khloe Kardashian is going to present herself, then she needs to start walking the red carpet at fashion events more often. Wow, I’m in awe and still wondering how that underboob is so perfectly perky.

Sure, it’s not my favorite look ever but there was so much black on the red carpet that seeing Christina Ricci in this colorful Rodarte look was like a breath of fresh air.

I’m still not sure how I feel about Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera, but this is a gorgeous color and a pretty dress.

In a night of forgettables, Diane von Furstenberg was a standout.

I love everything about this Tom Ford number including the hood, the color, the sleeves and the silhouette.

I was hoping for a little more than just a suit, but the bright yellow highlighter color makes it pop.

This is a beautiful metallic moment.
Black is the New Black

Yep, there’s no shying away from Kim Kardashian. She looks great, of course, even though her dress is nothing more than tight-fitting latex.

Cher is divine as always. Vogue called this leather evening dress “dive bar-glam.”

This simple and sleek black belted column dress is stunning.

At least Kylie is doing something different. She wears an asymmetric organza dress with a unique bustier in black pleated lacquered organza and a velvet skirt from the Mugler 1999 Haute Couture collection, ‘Les Méduses’.

Zoey Deutch wearing Coach. I’ve seen her look a whole lot better than this. And what was up with all the black?

Edgy? Sure. For me, though, Kerry Washington’s custom, black Vera Wang blazer dress is mostly forgettable, even with the ruffles and the garter straps. Law Roach, Washington’s stylist, was honored with an award at the event.

If anyone can pull this look off, it’s Janelle Monae.
The Worst Dressed at the 2022 CFDA Fashion Awards

I would probably call Proenza Schouler my absolute favorite designer label. Sadly, I totally hate this outfit.

No idea what this extreme cutout look is all about but the whole thing is way over the top. Including her hair. It’s just tacky.

Not sure what kind of punk plaid look Gigi Hadid was going for here but I hated it.

I’m probably going to get some flack for this. I am sure there are people out there who loved this artistic print off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera dress with oversize sleeves and a matching boot. In theory, I like the dress. But this doesn’t strike me as something Keke would wear. It’s too old lady for her. Perhaps that’s exactly why she wore it – to surprise us. Still, this is a worst dressed moment for me. OK, I’m not a huge fan of the dress (or matching boots) either. She can do better. What do you think?
