It’s officially sweater weather, and a cozy cardigan is the perfect way to stay warm this fall and winter. For women over 50, a cardigan sweater is a wardrobe essential, and even if you already have one (or a few), consider adding a new style or color to your closet. There is a wide variety of styles from which to choose this season, and I always like to start with the designer styles. They offer the best details and quality and are totally on-trend. However, they can be quite a splurge, so I also found some very similar cardigans for a steal.

Here are some reasons to own a cardigan (or 2 or 3) if you are over 50.

1. It’s comfortable! As much as I adore blazers to pull together an outfit, a cardigan serves the same purpose only it is so much softer, stretchier and not as restrictive. When you are over 50 you never want to feel uncomfortable, again.

2. A cardigan is easy to remove. Women over 50 often have unpredictable body temperature changes (hot flashes) and you can gracefully remove a cardigan.

3. Cardigan-sweaters are flattering. There are many style options available insuring you can get one that works for your body-type. A long open-front cardigan works for most women over 50, however the cropped jacket-styles are ideal over skirts and dresses as well as high waisted pants that are trending right now.

4. They’re versatile! One cardigan can give you multiple looks. Wear it over a scoop-neck tank or t-shirt in the fall and over a thin turtleneck sweater in winter.
