Spring Fashion Must-Have: How to Style the Voluminous Pants Trend

One of my favorite trends for the spring season is big, voluminous pants. I’ve made it no secret that as my personal style has evolved, I’ve started to lean on the side of comfort over anything else. I know skinny jeans are making a comeback, and I can get on board with that; however, give me a pair of extra wide leg pants any day. In my mind, it’s almost the equivalent of wearing pajamas outside the house, but much more stylish. So, what’s not to love? I’ve packed my spring wardrobe full of voluminous pants in all colors and fabrics. If you are looking to add a few options to your closet for spring 2025, I’ve already done the work for you! Here are some of my favorite voluminous pants to get you started.

Neutral Color Voluminous Pants

These pants can turn into a staple in your wardrobe pretty quickly. Focusing on voluminous pants in tan, army green and black is a wonderful and effortless way to get you started. One of my absolute favorite finds that I came across while researching for this article was this pleated, cotton version from Target. I instantly fell in love with them as well as the matching top. They also come in black, so you can get both colors and have a basic assortment to go with the rest of the items in your closet. A good styling trick for voluminous pants is to keep the top simple, shorter and boxy in order to make the proportions work.

Super Wide Leg Pants in Khaki

If green is your color for the spring, you can try this version from ASOS, also pleated. These look similar to the ones from Target, but have both viscose and spandex in them, so they will likely have some stretch and a softer feel. I love the idea of pairing these with a light-yellow top or sweater and some low-profile sneakers, like classic Converse or Adidas.

Black is always a color you can fall back on if you don’t know what other color to try. I found these tie-belt pleated trousers from Vince Camuto at Macy’s that are a less casual option. They are the perfect pick for the office or a dressier occasion and will look chic paired with a pair of heels, strappy sandals or leather mules.

Finally, for my gray ladies, I found these super-chic trousers from H&M. There are five shades of gray to choose from, so you can pick your favorite or get a few to satisfy your gray needs. They also come in tan and black, so if you end up loving the quality and fit, you can grab the other colors as well. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I can see these becoming a definite staple in your spring closet.

Bold And Printed Voluminous Pants

If solids are not your thing for the spring, don’t be afraid to jump on the bandwagon of bold patterns and prints. Some of my favorites that I found are these swirl-print Jant pants. I love the color, the flowing fabric and the fact that is has a matching top. It’s perfect for a vacation look or I’d rock this for a Sunday brunch on a hot summer day.

Linen Look Tailored Wide Leg Pants in Tapestry Floral Print
ASOS LUXE Linen Look Tailored Wide Leg Pants in Tapestry Floral Print, $70

If you want something even more bold, how about the floral pattern on these linen-like extra-wide leg pants from ASOS? The pink color and extra vibrant flower print is incredibly feminine, and I love the unexpected details like the fold-over waist. It’s another pair that comes with a matching top. Even though I’m not a super fan of the cropped top for myself and wouldn’t recommend it for women over 50, I’m sure someone out there would love it and make it work.

Lastly, if you prefer to scale it back a bit, but still not go completely basic, I would suggest these denim-like cotton flared pants. I love the light wash color, and the subtle “x” raised stitch pattern. These are a beautiful alternate to jeans. If you don’t want to go full denim, this lightweight cotton option is thinner breezy and another pair of voluminous pants that I’ve decided to try for myself.

Expert Style Tips: The Voluminous Pants Trend

• Shoe options matter. Your best bet for voluminous pants is to wear them with platform shoes or sandals. This will create a further illusion of an elongated leg. However, if heels are no longer in your regular rotation, you can swap them out for ballet flats, flat sandals, or a slim profile sneaker. Just remember to get your pants hemmed as needed so they fall just a tad above where your heel hits the ground.

• Proportions play a hug role. As I mentioned before, you don’t want to have volume on the bottom and volume on the top. So, if you are sporting the voluminous pants trend, whether you have a fitted or boxy shirt, be sure to keep your top shorter (or tuck in a longer top).

• Trend or mainstay? I know voluminous pants are a trend for spring 2025, but in my opinion, I don’t think this style is going anywhere. I predict voluminous pants will be around for another few seasons. So, if I were you, I’d start building up my collection of options to take me from now through the rest of the year!
