What was once old is new again is a fashion mantra. This spring, not just one single trend but an entire era of yesterday is on full display for all of us fashion-lovers to appreciate. Victorian-inspired fashion is trickling its way into our spring wardrobe and I must admit, I love it. High necklines, ruffles, brocade, rich colors and textures and full sleeves are now all spring-appropriate looks, proving that less skin can be more.
This month I’d like to talk about one of my favorite fashion topics: shoes! More specifically a spring shoe trend that has completely dominated the season, the lace up sandal. I consider this trend to be an updated and more refined spin on the gladiator sandals that we couldn’t get away from a few years ago. For 2016, the laces are delicate and thin, feminine and much more universally flattering than earlier versions of this trend.
We saw them all over the runway for spring 2016: soft, flowey, and slightly oversized belted overcoats reminiscent of the 80s. Do you remember these robe-like, slouchy midi coats? I immediately thought of Cybill Shepherd in Moonlighting or the oversized jackets on Miami Vice. The best part about these slouchy coats is that they hide what you are wearing underneath and give you a professional look in a flash.
It’s time to cast aside the fashion taboo that leather and suede is only for the winter months. Suede has made a major comeback and not in the heavy weight 1960s and 70s hippie way. Suede has been re-imagined for today’s modern woman (and man!) and is now soft, buttery, lightweight and ideal for transitioning into the warmer weather months.
