The idea of offering a line of packable travel pieces is not new but doing it well is. Partners Anne Kennedy Dotson and Sarah Kennedy who recently launched BUCKLEY K, put the travel fashion concept to work and they got it just right! I met the two sisters from Chicago before their launch party on Monday. I had a the opportunity to touch and feel the fine Italian ponte knit and washed silk fabrics of their pieces and I can also say that the construction is divine.
The concept of BUCKLEY K developed when Anne was working in Saudi Arabia and Sarah would visit for extended stays. In their travels they had a desire for fashionable pieces they could roll up to pack, would keep their shape and look great from day to evening. It started with the Souq Skirt and took off from there. Many of their pieces serve multiple functions, like the beach coverup that works just as well with a belt over a camisole and jeans.
I was particularly impressed by the construction of the pieces. The pointe knit has a thicker hand and holds its shape. Some of the dresses, such as the Morgan Dress, are lined, so there’s no need for a slip! They offer sizes from 0 to 14 which I think is essential.” We looked into sizing in Small, Medium and Large,” Anne explained. “But the difference between those sizes is 2 inches! We want the pieces to fit well.” That really had me sold!
BUCKLEY K is headquartered and manufactured right here in Chicago. The line sells exclusively online and at pop-up shops, which provides us with better price points for these luxury basics. The sisters told me if they sold their items at retail a dress, for example, would have to be marked up to $398. And they offer free shipping so you can shop online confidently. I think the sisters thought of everything!
Each piece in the collection tells a story, whether inspired by a cozy café in Paris, an idyllic beachside stroll in Australia or a desert oasis in the Middle East. Each season will be inspired by a different destination. The Spring 2014 collection focuses on Capri, Italy and incorporates items that American women will love having in her suitcase: beach cover-ups, color-blocked maxi dresses, nautical striped drop waist dresses, and lightweight tunics.
